Local Landmarks 10km 2023

This post is in collaboration with Local Landmarks.

Whether I’m at home in London or away travelling I love exploring on foot. There is always something new, cool or different to spot alongside iconic gems and places only locals know, and I feel very lucky that running has enabled me to discover ‘The Grand. The Quirky. The Hidden’.

This year the Local Landmarks 10km is back on Sunday 19 February 2023 and is all about encouraging everyone to discover ‘The Grand. The Quirky. The Hidden’ where they live. Perhaps you live somewhere that inspired a famous film (growing up the next village over from where I lived inspired Lord of the Rings!), an ancient historical ruin (when I lived in Scotland we were surrounded by ruined Castles) or a statue commemorating a local hero (I love spotting Blue Plaques around London!) we all have local landmarks that make where we live special, and this 10km is all about sharing them!

Participating is super easy, simply map and run a 10km route for your local area and all its ‘Grand, Quirky and Hidden’ landmarks….which got me thinking about which local landmarks I’m going to include in my Local Landmarks 10km in South London.

My Brixton Local Landmarks 10km

It was actually a huge challenge to narrow down which landmarks to include in my 10km because Brixton has them on every corner, but I figure I’ll start at Brixton Tube Station and end at Parissi, one of my favourite local cafes.

Obviously I’ll need to include the David Bowie Memorial, Electric Avenue (the first street market to be lit by electric lights) and Windrush Square (named to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Windrush and home to the Black Cultural Archives and the Ritzy Cinema).

Next I think I’ll head up Brixton Hill to the windmill, yes Brixton has a working windmill.

There is tonnes of street art around Brixton, some of which has been around for years (this guide is great) and some of which has popped up more recently, so I think I’ll have a wiggle around and check out some art out.

One of my favourite spots to run to in Brixton is Ebony Horse Club, a stables tucked into some railway arches under the gaze of high rise blocks, so I’ll make sure I pop by there to say hi to the horses.

Obviously 10km is a reasonable distance, so I’ll probably nip over to Ruskin Park. Its in Camberwell not Brixton, but it has special significance to me and you never know one of the air ambulances might be parked up on the playing fields (a not uncommon sight in parks around South London) and it’s got lovely views of the city. I spent so much time in this part when I was pregnant with Evie as its right next to Kings College Hospital (where I virtually lived in the last months), and it seems fitting to include it give Local Landmarks 10km supports Tommy’s the UK’s largest pregnancy and baby loss charity.

Finally I’ll wiggle my way back to Brixton via some more street art and go and pay a visit to the commuters at Brixton Station before tucking into cake and coffee at my favourite cafe!
